She is a South African Ladies Indoor Cricket World Cup winner- and she did it twice! Now Talita Wiegand is hitting a six with her students in the classroom as a passionate Life Orientation teacher and sports coordinator at Crawford International private school in Sandton. Learn more about sports at Crawford International here.
Where did the Indoor Cricket start?
It's an interesting story. I was on crutches at the time. I hobbled to the cricket arena to support a friend and to see what all the fuss was about. It ended up that my friend’s team was a player short and they asked me to fill-in. The rest, as they say, is history.
So your love of indoor cricket was discovered by accident, what have you accomplished since then?
I have been privileged to have represented South Africa in four World Cups - winning the last two World Cups as Captain. We were also the first South African team in history to win back-to-back World Cups.
How did you come to teach at Crawford International school - hitting sixes in the classroom?
In indoor cricket you actually hit sevens but yes, I’m always aiming to hit it out of the park. I actually started as the girl’s sport coordinator and was then asked to teach Life Orientation. My passion for teaching, and the subject, grew quickly as I realised how important it was for my students.
What about indoor cricket is in line with Crawford International’s philosophy of teaching life skills and global citizenship?
Action cricket is about thinking on your feet, respecting the game and your opponents. Crawford cultivates critical thinking in our students. We always explore alternative viewpoints and respect the diversity of others.
Why is Life Orientation such an important subject?
How much time do you have? Life Orientation is a great subject platform to discuss and explore tricky topics in a safe environment. It builds character and shapes personalities and helps students understand diversity. It’s a fascinating subject.
Do you prefer Life Orientation to Sports Coordination?
There’s synergy between them. Both LO and physical education allow our students to adopt a healthy lifestyle - mentally and physically. They both offer the opportunity for students to move outside of their comfort zones - to experience that special moment of understanding or physical achievement. The synergies are endless.
If we asked your students what makes you a good teacher, what would they say?
They would say that I offer an engaging classroom experience where we make tough, real-life topics easier to discuss and understand.
What do you think makes you a good teacher?
I make sure that my students understand the other side of the coin in all topics. I enjoy sharing my passion for life and I like to laugh with them.
What advice do you have for your students?
Be kind to yourself. Every bad thing that happens is a stepping stone to something better.
Congratulations on all your achievements. What does the future hold?
I would like to play in another World Cup and defend our title!
