There’s no denying that the world has gone through some drastic changes recently, changes that will continue as the fourth industrial revolution and the digital age evolve further. Every part of life has been affected by this change: how we live, how we work, what we chose to study, what career we want to pursue.
The impact of change is especially obvious when you reflect on how different career options are now, compared to what career options were available when we were deciding on our future professions. Jobs like social media managers, network engineers, YouTubers, social media influencers, UI designers, and many more, careers that simply did not exist 15 years ago.
So, when it comes to preparing our children to succeed in their own future, thinking about the possible career paths of the future is a good place to start. While no one can see the future with certainty, it is safe to say that the job market of the future will revolve around the STEM fields and the various skills needed in these fields.
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, all of which are fields that form the foundation of the careers that exist today and will continue to exist in the future.
If you think about it, the most sought-after skills in today’s job market include that of data analysts; AI and machine learning specialists; digital transformation specialists; big data specialists; to name a few. These jobs all utilise aspects from the STEM fields, as well as incorporate core skills like problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. These fields all rely on analysing data to develop logical and deductive reasoning to identify issues and ideas, solve problems and establish connections. According to trend analysts, these skills will be external to secure jobs in the future.
What are some of the possible careers our children can look forward to? Think along the lines of autonomous and electrical vehicle engineers, robotics and AI, space exploration, green power, AR (augmented reality) VR (virtual reality), biotechnology, future-farming, and even science ethicists.
It all sounds very exciting, but as a generation of accountants and business managers, how do we prepare our children to face the challenges these future professions will bring. One way is to expose our children to STEM related thinking and skills. Here are some ideas:
1.Essential skills for the future will be ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, so helping your child develop soft skills is a must. There are things like creativity, critical thinking, social skills, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
2.Ensure your child’s education develops the skills and learning needed to face this future. Crawford International prides itself on future-focused learning in our curriculum.
3.Emotional intelligence (EQ) will be needed in addition to problem-solving – teamwork, empathy, and communication are the foundation blocks of EQ. Find out more about how to help encourage EQ in your child in our blog.
4.Technological know-how is also an important part of preparing your child for the jobs of the future. Look into ways of integrating your child’s personal interests with tech skills by letting them explore coding, at-home science experiments, AI, etc. You may also want to relook at how screen time is used in your home. There is such a thing as active screentime that helps expose your child to technology in positive ways.
We hope that these suggestions will help you prepare your child for a future in STEM related careers.
