We are currently part of a digital transformation where computers are already deeply integrated into all aspects of our lives, and this will continue forever!
Because of this fact, it is important for any child to at least learn the basics of coding to get a general understanding of the world around them. More advanced levels of coding for kids will also open up doors for their future careers, which we probably don’t even know about yet.
Coding Explained:
Essentially, coding is all about putting an instruction or task into a language that can be understood by a computer. Coding languages like C++, Java, Python, and more are what help us humans talk to machines and tell them what to do. Exploring technology through developing simple coding skills helps to future-proof our kids with the skills they’ll need in a digitised world and in their future careers.
Here are five simple, introductory ways to get your kids coding:
1. Start Off Unplugged
You may not believe this, but one of the first and most basic ways your child can start learning to code doesn’t even need a computer! One example of a great, non-computer coding game features an average deck of cards and a few small toys.
The aim here is to get a toy figurine from one side of a card maze to another by instructing the toy how to move – this is, at its roots, how algorithms work, which is what ‘coding’ is built on. Find the full explanation of this great coding game for kids here.
2. Play Coding Games
If setting up a DIY coding game sounds like a lot of work, you can visit a toy store or look online to stock up on scientifically created coding and STEM games for your child, and ones that the whole family can actually play.
These function as board games and are available for all ages and skill levels, and again mimic online coding by using patterns, instructions, and riddles to create pseudo algorithms. What’s more, coding games and skills also have a positive impact on math and writing skills. Begin your search in the STEM aisle.
3. Get Appy
Who doesn't love a good app?. Coding apps for all ages and skillsets can be downloaded on your phone, tablet, or computer – many of them for free.
What’s more, some of them function as ‘games’, so your child is picking up digital know-how while engaging in beloved ‘video games’. It’s a win-win, so look out for apps like Scratch Jr, Hackety Hack, Made With Code by Google, Tynker, and CodeKarts. There are many to choose from.
4. Read All About It
Because coding is essentially all about language, books and worksheets are also a great way to get familiar with it. Visit a good bookstore and comb through the STEM offerings to find resources for your child. There are many coding languages out there, some easier than others.
5. Find a Course
There are so many local resources that offer coding courses and classes for kids of all ages. Some of these are self-paced, while others focus on structured online lessons. Have a look at some of these options:

Coding is also offered as an extramural at many of our campuses. Chat to your child’s teacher to find out more about coding for kids at your Crawford International school.
Much like any educational process, coding for kids is best done while having fun. So, however you approach it, make sure your child is enjoying themselves and the learning will take place naturally.
