Kyle Hendry is a designer, developer, implementer and tester of computer-based hardware and software. Overall, he is a talented and successful computer engineer and proud old Crawfordian. Kyle attended Crawford International Ruimsig and matriculated in 2015.

Why did you study a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering?
Believe me when I say, when I was much younger my aspirations were quite different. I wanted to be a pilot. Flying an airplane at that time of my life sounded like exciting stuff. However, as I grew, I realised that I can fly planes through computers too and thus this passion of becoming a Computer Engineer expanded, the rest is history.

Why is this career choice such a perfect fit for you?
I am passionate about creating something and seeing it come to life. The idea of coupling coding with problem-solving is why Computer Engineering is the perfect fit for me. I’m happy to play around and initiate ideas, because ideas can bring true revolution. Other’s magic is our engineering.

Talk us through a day in the life of a Computer Engineer.
Every morning I have a meeting with my team so that we can all touch base with each other and align our goals. Thereafter I put on my headphones, with some funky beats, to focus and spend most of the day programming with very few interruptions. There is a lot of innovation and creativity in my job. It’s always great fun to figure out how to make the products run more efficiently for our different clients.

Do you work on more than one client at a time?
Sometimes and it is important to learn how to manage your time and prioritise what’s on your to-do list. I feel that attending Crawford International private school taught me that.

What is the most challenging part of being a Computer Engineer?
Personally, I think it is the work-life balance. Sometimes you can get so entrenched in the problem that you are solving that you can forget the world around you.

Where do you see this industry going?
The possibilities are endless. Our industry is just growing at a rapid pace, making the journey so exciting. I do believe it is going to focus greatly on automating the mundane. I see Software Engineering moving more towards improving AI and/or solving complex problems that need a human touch.

What project are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on a programme that makes it easy for companies to automate and manage process flow within their businesses.

Would you say Crawford assisted you for your career path?
Oh yes! My teachers were instrumental in shaping my love for learning and improving myself and my capabilities. They inspired us to do whatever we put our minds to and gave us the foundation and confidence to go after what we love.

What advice do you have for our next generation of Crawfordians?
Don't take life too seriously. High School can be full of drama, don't let it discourage you, only you know what you're truly capable of. Even if you aren't getting straight As across the board, focus on what you're good at and things will fall into place.

What advice do you have for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Today is the best time to become a computer engineer. If you are passionate about this subject jump straight into it. It is one profession that will give you a real superpower to not only solve complex problems, but think critically and innovate.

Do you have a support system at home?
I have a wonderful support system at home. I am currently engaged to Erin, whom I met and started dating at school. We have a beautiful one year-old daughter Nova. Then, we shouldn’t forget our fur-babies, Max our dog, Salem our cat and Ares our rat – rather a mixed bunch.

What does the future hold for you?
I still dream about making my way into the game development industry. I know that it is an intense industry and you need to improve on your coding skills. I love playing and creating Video games. Therefore, I’m in the process of building my portfolio. I’ve started with simple games and hope to soon work my way up to more complex ones. Who knows, perhaps one day soon there will be a game on the market that will be created by me. Watch this space, big things are about to happen.

A Guide To Parent Teacher Meetings The new academic term has just started a few weeks ago, and families with school-going children are settling into their routines. However, as students transition back to the classroom, another important aspect of the school calendar looms, parent teacher meetings. While these meetings are integral to nurturing strong collaboration between families and schools, they can also bring a mix of emotions, from curiosity to unease, for parents. In South Africa, where over 12 million students attend public and private schools (Department of Basic Education, 2023), the importance of such interactions cannot be overstated. These sessions offer invaluable insights into a child’s academic progress, social development, and overall well-being. What Are Parent Teacher Meetings? Parent teacher meetings are structured conversations between parents and their child’s teachers, aimed at discussing the student’s academic performance, behaviour, and overall development. These meetings create an opportunity for open communication, ensuring that both parties can collaborate effectively to support the student’s educational journey. They are not just a platform for addressing concerns but also for celebrating achievements and setting shared goals. What Do They Entail at Crawford? At Crawford International, parent teacher meetings are designed to be more than just routine check-ins. They reflect our commitment to fostering strong partnerships with families. During these sessions, parents meet with teachers to gain a holistic view of their student’s progress, not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Teachers share personalised feedback, highlight areas of growth, and discuss strategies to address challenges. These meetings are tailored to align with our ethos of developing well-rounded students, emphasising collaboration to ensure every child reaches their potential. How Often Are They? Parent teacher meetings at Crawford typically occur once per term, although additional sessions may be scheduled based on specific needs or requests. Regularity ensures that parents stay informed about their child’s journey throughout the academic year. These consistent touchpoints help to build trust and maintain a steady flow of communication between parents and teachers. How Best Should Parents Prepare for Them? Preparation is key to making the most of parent teacher meetings. Here are a few practical tips: Review Reports and Notes – before the meeting, review any recent academic reports, test results, or communication from the school. This provides a foundation for meaningful discussions. Prepare Questions – jot down specific questions or concerns you want to address. For example, ask about areas where your child excels or struggles and how you can support them at home. Engage with Your Child – have a conversation with your child about their experiences at school. Understanding their perspective can provide valuable context for the meeting. Be Open-Minded – approach the meeting with a collaborative mindset. Remember, the goal is to work together with the teachers to support your child’s growth. Take Notes – during the meeting, take notes on key points discussed, including recommendations from teachers. This ensures you can follow through on agreed actions. Parent teacher meetings are more than a requirement; they are an investment in a child’s future. By approaching these sessions with preparation and a collaborative spirit, parents can play an active role in shaping their child’s educational journey. As families across South Africa embrace this vital part of the school experience, let’s work together to make each interaction meaningful and impactful.
