Setting the stage alight from the outset of his career is Crawford Sandton Alumni, Matthew Counihan. A vibrant, passionate and award-winning performer, educator, director and producer, Matthew has been involved in a variety of large scale and world-class performances, gracing the world’s top stages in front and behind the curtain.

What did you study?

I graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, however the charm of the Arts held a stronger allure for me - Musical Theatre in particular.

Did you re-direct your education towards the arts?

The traditional career trajectory for Arts-graduates typically didn’t paint the prettiest of pictures. Creativity was a niched skill reserved for only a select few who managed to break into this small world. Fortunately for me, I found myself in the right place at the right time and I landed a feature-role in a Pieter Toerien production called HAIR.

What were some of your performing highlights?

Oh boy, how much time do you have? I’ve had the wonderful privilege to perform in many musicals, travelling abroad with Broadway and West End touring productions – which allowed my heart to sing, dance and act on a daily basis! I am also a commercial voice over artist, corporate performer, educator and stage producer and director.

Wow! What have you directed?

Quite a few productions, but one stand-out theatre production that I directed was ‘My Children! My Africa’ at The South African State Theatre – with both the cast and creatives receiving a host of Naledi Award nominations. I also conceived and directed a full-scale musical of ‘African Pulse: Celebrating the Ndlovu Youth Choir ‘ at The Teatro Montecasino recently.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I have been working as a director and producer for one of SA’s top producing houses - Showtime Management - and the role has allowed me to combine my experience as performer with my very structured and considered personality. I see the bigger picture and I’m able to craft concepts that require clear communication in a compelling, authentic and joyous manner and this excites me tremendously. I also have the opportunity to collaborate with other creatives and birth new ideas. Actually, it’s beyond thrilling!

And you’re a star in the classroom!

My career also made a turn in several private institution classrooms, shaping and moulding young hearts and minds in their educational learning-journeys in formal learning environments.

Would you say attending a Crawford International private school inspired your career path?

Absolutely. I’m a proud Crawfordian! Crawford made me a free thinker - independent and creative. It offered me the opportunity to blossom in my own unique way – there was never a one-size-fits-all approach. Crawford met me where I was at. I have held onto this and afforded those that I have met the same opportunities.

How do your peers and students remember you?

Yowzers! Many people would summarise me as: connected, empathic, thoughtful, all ‘heart-and-head’, direct, honest, authentic and joyful. For me, I think I’m grounded and hardworking, as well as "living the dream".

The last two years have been very challenging for so many, especially in the entertainment industry. How have you transformed in this year and within your industry?

To say that the last 18 months has been a challenge is an understatement. The eventing and performance industry has been decimated. Our capacity to earn and support ourselves and our loved ones has been severely compromised. Nothing quite like a pandemic to shake up our world!

But as artists, we know that action and reaction go hand-in-hand. Life had delivered its epic monologue and it was my turn to respond: I have become stiller, engaging with my inner-self — a slowing down if you will. But, by no means complacent. I feel “richer” and more equipped than ever before.

Acknowledging that my creative and performance skills have positioned me beautifully to respond to this very uncertain world. From presenting a series (one years-worth) of self-made “what’s happening” videos to developing accessible messaging for large corporates, to putting A-list performers on top of an open-top double decker bus to deliver Songs of Hope (HOPEtober) to frontline healthcare workers around our country – it’s been quite a journey.

What project are you currently working?

Covid has presented us with plenty of challenges in terms of going about our business in the usual manner, so whilst we would typically be running a show and concurrently working on pre-prod for a number of upcoming productions, we find ourselves staring down the rabbit-holes of 2022, 2023 and 2024. Our business is about foresight and planning. We are currently assessing future opportunities. Watch this space, big things to come!

What advice would you give your 17-year-old self?

The years ahead are going to present you with turbulence and unpredictability, learn to find the lessons in the unknown. Learn to embrace the change and identify the opportunities that may arise from the associated discomfort. Sit in the discomfort, be patient with it and tap into its possibilities. Oh yeah, and start dancing. Life is constantly changing up the rhythm.

Where do you see this industry going in SA?

I believe that we will begin to see a slow resurgence and return to live entertainment. My sense is that it will take time for the epic-import productions to return, but that South Africa will be churning out some awesome seminal works. Producers and creatives are going to have to flex their creative muscles to present affordable (yet incredibly captivating and compelling) works. Smaller shows, intimate encounters and scaled down production-value. So, support the local theatre, I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised!

What does the future hold for Matthew?

Who knows?! Mixing my skills up in corporate environments and continuing my adventures in theatres… What I am certain about is that stories will forever be part of my life; joyous encounters and sharing moments with audiences locally and abroad. And hopefully travel and great food too.

It’s not just about academics but about becoming a well-rounded critical thinker and team player. Exposure to diverse cultures, teamwork, individuality and taking responsibility for my outcomes were invaluable lessons I carried with me.” Words of Wisdom To his younger self, Dylan would say: “Step out of your comfort zone sooner. Growth happens when you challenge yourself. Leaving home was tough, but the personal and professional growth was worth every stumble along the way.” Dylan’s story is a testament to courage, hard work and the power of embracing the unknown. A Guide To Parent Teacher Meetings The new academic term has just started a few weeks ago, and families with school-going children are settling into their routines. However, as students transition back to the classroom, another important aspect of the school calendar looms, parent teacher meetings. While these meetings are integral to nurturing strong collaboration between families and schools, they can also bring a mix of emotions, from curiosity to unease, for parents. In South Africa, where over 12 million students attend public and private schools (Department of Basic Education, 2023), the importance of such interactions cannot be overstated. These sessions offer invaluable insights into a child’s academic progress, social development, and overall well-being. What Are Parent Teacher Meetings? Parent teacher meetings are structured conversations between parents and their child’s teachers, aimed at discussing the student’s academic performance, behaviour, and overall development. These meetings create an opportunity for open communication, ensuring that both parties can collaborate effectively to support the student’s educational journey. They are not just a platform for addressing concerns but also for celebrating achievements and setting shared goals. What Do They Entail at Crawford? At Crawford International, parent teacher meetings are designed to be more than just routine check-ins. They reflect our commitment to fostering strong partnerships with families. During these sessions, parents meet with teachers to gain a holistic view of their student’s progress, not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Teachers share personalised feedback, highlight areas of growth, and discuss strategies to address challenges. These meetings are tailored to align with our ethos of developing well-rounded students, emphasising collaboration to ensure every child reaches their potential. How Often Are They? Parent teacher meetings at Crawford typically occur once per term, although additional sessions may be scheduled based on specific needs or requests. Regularity ensures that parents stay informed about their child’s journey throughout the academic year. These consistent touchpoints help to build trust and maintain a steady flow of communication between parents and teachers. How Best Should Parents Prepare for Them? Preparation is key to making the most of parent teacher meetings. Here are a few practical tips: Review Reports and Notes – before the meeting, review any recent academic reports, test results, or communication from the school. This provides a foundation for meaningful discussions. Prepare Questions – jot down specific questions or concerns you want to address. For example, ask about areas where your child excels or struggles and how you can support them at home. Engage with Your Child – have a conversation with your child about their experiences at school. Understanding their perspective can provide valuable context for the meeting. Be Open-Minded – approach the meeting with a collaborative mindset. Remember, the goal is to work together with the teachers to support your child’s growth. Take Notes – during the meeting, take notes on key points discussed, including recommendations from teachers. This ensures you can follow through on agreed actions. Parent teacher meetings are more than a requirement; they are an investment in a child’s future. By approaching these sessions with preparation and a collaborative spirit, parents can play an active role in shaping their child’s educational journey. As families across South Africa embrace this vital part of the school experience, let’s work together to make each interaction meaningful and impactful.
