CENTRE STAGE WITH DIOLAN GOVENDER

Diolan Govender’s passion for the arts was cultivated during his time at Crawford International, and since leaving school he has embarked on a successful acting career that has taken him to national and international stages and to the most famous of small screens.

1.  Can you tell us about your time at Crawford International, and how it influenced your path toward acting?

My years at Crawford International La Lucia College were truly formative. The school fostered an environment that encouraged creativity and self-expression, which played a significant role in shaping my interest in the arts. I was involved in numerous school productions, which ignited my passion for acting. Teachers and peers at Crawford provided invaluable support and encouragement, helping me build the confidence I needed to pursue my career.

2.  You have a stutter, did this influence you at all?

As a shy child, I spoke quickly, often struggling with a severe stutter and conversations were a challenge. On stage, however, I found my voice without hesitation or stutter. It was a place where my words flowed effortlessly.

3. Wow, that is fantastic. You received some wonderful opportunities while at school?

Apart from a brilliant education, Crawford’s tag line ‘Every Child a Masterpiece’ was an inspiration to me. They pushed me towards my talents. In addition to drama school training as a child, I also studied at the New York Film Academy for a summer course in 2015. I was also fortunate to land a presenter gig on YoTV!

4. What did your future hold after school?

After completing my education at Crawford, I pursued further studies at the University of Witwatersrand. I recognised the importance of honing my craft and enhancing my skills to excel in the competitive world of entertainment. My post-school studies included intensive acting training, workshops and mentorship programmes, all of which played a pivotal role in shaping me into the actor I am today.

5. What were some of the hurdles you faced and how did you overcome them?

Transitioning from high school to the professional world of acting was indeed challenging. One of the biggest hurdles was the uncertainty of the industry. Acting is highly competitive and rejection is a part of the journey. It took time to build a thick skin and learn not to take rejection personally. I focused on continuous improvement. I attended acting classes, and auditions regularly. Networking is so crucial and building relationships within the industry opened doors to opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

6. Congratulations on your recent role on Netflix! Can you tell us a bit about the project and your character?

Thank you! It’s been an incredible experience. I play the role of Shaan, a charismatic, yet selfish individual in the Netflix teen comedy series, Miseducation. My character is a complete contrast to me in real life - Shaan's quite the jerk.

7. Netflix is known for its global reach. How does it feel to be part of a platform that is watched by audiences all around the world?

it’s incredibly thrilling and humbling. Netflix’s global reach means that my work can be seen by people from all walks of life, from different cultures and backgrounds. It’s a reminder of the power of storytelling to connect people, and it’s an honour to contribute to such a great script and depict the character on such a massive scale.

8. What drew you to this particular project?

While I initially auditioned for the lead role of Jay, I was cast as Shaan. Reading Shaan’s script, I was captivated by the storytelling and his multi-layered character. Shaan’s complexity isn’t all explicitly shown, allowing viewers to piece together his story as he intertwines with Jay’s journey as a university student at Makhanda University, exploring his identity and sexuality.

9. How did you prepare for your role?

Preparation is key in acting. To connect with Shaan, I spent time researching the character and working closely with the director to understand their vision for the character. Once the groundwork is done, we collaborate and finetune the performance through ensuring a cohesive and compelling narrative.

10. What advice would you give to aspiring actors, especially those who are just starting their journey?

Be persistent and passionate. This industry can be tough, and rejection is part of the process, but don’t let it deter you. Keep honing your craft through classes and workshops. Build a strong support network of mentors, peers and industry professionals who can guide and inspire you. Be open to feedback and criticism, it’s how you’ll improve. Stay true to your self and your unique voice. The world of acting needs diverse perspectives and talents, so embrace your individuality and try use it to your advantage.

11. What does the future hold for you?

Hopefully many more diverse and challenging roles that will leave a lasting impact on the world of entertainment. I’m committed to grow and interpret storytelling of various topics. It can only be a promising career ahead if I continue to work hard and lead by example.

12. If you are not on the stage or practicing your craft, what do you enjoy doing?

I immerse myself in my other endeavours such as public relations, where I work with an exciting client portfolio and ensure that I'm up to date with all academic commitments. My love for the arts extends beyond acting, presenting, and content creation, fuelling a multifaceted creative spirit.

A Guide To Parent Teacher Meetings The new academic term has just started a few weeks ago, and families with school-going children are settling into their routines. However, as students transition back to the classroom, another important aspect of the school calendar looms, parent teacher meetings. While these meetings are integral to nurturing strong collaboration between families and schools, they can also bring a mix of emotions, from curiosity to unease, for parents. In South Africa, where over 12 million students attend public and private schools (Department of Basic Education, 2023), the importance of such interactions cannot be overstated. These sessions offer invaluable insights into a child’s academic progress, social development, and overall well-being. What Are Parent Teacher Meetings? Parent teacher meetings are structured conversations between parents and their child’s teachers, aimed at discussing the student’s academic performance, behaviour, and overall development. These meetings create an opportunity for open communication, ensuring that both parties can collaborate effectively to support the student’s educational journey. They are not just a platform for addressing concerns but also for celebrating achievements and setting shared goals. What Do They Entail at Crawford? At Crawford International, parent teacher meetings are designed to be more than just routine check-ins. They reflect our commitment to fostering strong partnerships with families. During these sessions, parents meet with teachers to gain a holistic view of their student’s progress, not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Teachers share personalised feedback, highlight areas of growth, and discuss strategies to address challenges. These meetings are tailored to align with our ethos of developing well-rounded students, emphasising collaboration to ensure every child reaches their potential. How Often Are They? Parent teacher meetings at Crawford typically occur once per term, although additional sessions may be scheduled based on specific needs or requests. Regularity ensures that parents stay informed about their child’s journey throughout the academic year. These consistent touchpoints help to build trust and maintain a steady flow of communication between parents and teachers. How Best Should Parents Prepare for Them? Preparation is key to making the most of parent teacher meetings. Here are a few practical tips: Review Reports and Notes – before the meeting, review any recent academic reports, test results, or communication from the school. This provides a foundation for meaningful discussions. Prepare Questions – jot down specific questions or concerns you want to address. For example, ask about areas where your child excels or struggles and how you can support them at home. Engage with Your Child – have a conversation with your child about their experiences at school. Understanding their perspective can provide valuable context for the meeting. Be Open-Minded – approach the meeting with a collaborative mindset. Remember, the goal is to work together with the teachers to support your child’s growth. Take Notes – during the meeting, take notes on key points discussed, including recommendations from teachers. This ensures you can follow through on agreed actions. Parent teacher meetings are more than a requirement; they are an investment in a child’s future. By approaching these sessions with preparation and a collaborative spirit, parents can play an active role in shaping their child’s educational journey. As families across South Africa embrace this vital part of the school experience, let’s work together to make each interaction meaningful and impactful.
