As part of the “Going Further” project on the unit ‘How We Organise Ourselves’, the Grade 0 Class at Crawford International Fourways, planted a vegetable garden after the central idea which explored the process that food goes through before it reaches our plates. Using voice and choice, the students decided to grow a vegetable garden and take care of it. When the tomatoes and lettuce are ready to be harvested, the learners will make a salad and serve the meal to everyone in the Pre-Primary community. Responsibility for our food, the production and manufacturing process of food has been a key highlight in this inquiry. They have developed their thinking skills and become more knowledgeable about the processes that happen around them.
Grade 7 PYP Exhibition Showcases Innovative Ideas Around Sustainability
Crawford International Fourways hosted their Grade 7 PYP exhibition in August to showcase innovative research and ideas around sustainability. The IB PYP Exhibition showcased the culmination of several weeks of intense research and collaborative work by the Grade 7 students. Each group had an opportunity to reflect on the skills developed in their PYP journey as well as their ability to engage with the school and wider community.
This year the students focused on the unit ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ and Tracey Hutcheson the school’s PYP Coordinator says, “the unit aligns with the UN’s sustainable goals, and it is relevant as it addresses all the global issues we are currently facing. We felt that the students needed to dig deeper into this unit, and they showed a passion for environmental issues, this gave them a platform to explore and come up with sustainable solutions.”
The exhibition not only reflects the student's academic growth but also their understanding of the world around them. Kopano Dandala – Deputy Principal says, ‘the exhibition gives us all an opportunity to celebrate the students’ learning journey.”
During the exhibition, students displayed their projects, shared their findings, and engaged in discussions with their peers, teachers, parents, and members of the wider community. The wide range of topics covered by the students includes sustainability, cultural diversity, social justice, and global citizenship. These projects demonstrate the students' ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their knowledge to real-life situations.
Ian Rothman, Principal at Crawford International Fourways expressed his excitement about the exhibition, stating, "The IB PYP Exhibition is a culmination of our students' hard work and dedication throughout their primary years. It is an opportunity for them to develop their skills and demonstrate their understanding of global issues. We are immensely proud of our students and their achievements."
