How are we doing since COVID?

How are we doing since COVID?
It has been approximately a year since we did away with all COVID restrictions and regulations. It has been a year since we stopped the enforcing of wearing masks, sanitizing, and avoiding physical contact. It does not seem that long but at the same time, it feels like this was a lifetime ago. Since then, we have tried to continue with our lives as normal, and being in the education sector, this meant trying to get things back to ‘normal’ for our students as quickly as possible. I often wonder, have we stopped to reflect on the impact this has had on ourselves, our families, our learners? Or did we just try to carry on as if nothing happened and ignore the significant stress, interruptions, and trauma that we experienced in the last two or three years?
Perhaps as the winter holidays approach, we should take some time out to consider these questions on a personal and professional level. I think that if we look closely, we will see that we have changed, the people and the systems around us have changed. These changes may not be so evident and may not be all bad, but the idea is to acknowledge and be aware of them. Some of these changes we may not be happy with and maybe we want to work on that. This is okay!
On the educational front, we have also seen many changes and advancements since the commencement of the pandemic. As teachers, principals, therapists, and educationalists, we have had to manage and adapt to these changes – which sometimes felt like would never end. What this showed us is that we can be creative, resilient, and proud of how we came through it all. On the other hand, we are now also facing a great challenge with how the pandemic has affected the learning and development of our learners.

There are delays, gaps, underdeveloped skills, and a lack of independence on a much larger scale than we have ever dealt with before.
Perhaps, there are no quick-fix solutions to this right now but there is hope that as Crawfordians we will overcome these new challenges with the same creativity and resilience that got us through the pandemic. For now, let us focus on the upcoming, much-deserved, break and take time out for ourselves and our families.
