The Role of Technology in Modern Parenting

Parenting today looks very different to what it looked like twenty, or even ten, years ago! Technology has completely transformed our relationships with our children, and it’s good to know that it isn’t necessarily all negative.
It’s true, most home wars today between parents and children have arisen due to disagreements relating to technology. On the one hand, children feel that their phones, gaming devices and screen time are their right, not a privilege. On the other hand, parents feel children spend way too much time with eyes glued to screens and use it as part of a reward or punishment system. The truth is some parents feel out of control where technology is concerned as their children navigate a cyber world that perhaps they have less understanding of. Technology can be an issue and a worry, but the impact that technology has on parenting doesn’t necessarily have to be all negative. Here are four ways technology positively impacts parenting and families.
1. Working from home
Technology has allowed many parents the opportunity to work flexi-time or from home permanently, which means more time to spend with the children. More focused time, more family connection and more positive guidance ultimately means a healthier family, and healthier kids overall. And think of all the thousands of Rands saved on transport and aftercare. Thanks technology!
2. Education Assistance
Back in the day, we used to get information from the library, from the brains of our parents and grandparents and, for those lucky ones, The World Book Encyclopaedias. We would learn as much as was on offer between two book covers, or between two ears. Today however, technology has opened up infinite learning possibilities for our children and as parents, we need to embrace this. Think of it, while our children are gathering information off the internet, the pressure is off us to know everything. A good example of a positive learning technology is Crawford International’s recently launched ADvLEARN – a digital platform for both teachers and students, that has shown proven results of increased marks in mathematics. The programme has bridged the gap between technology and learning. A very positive impact indeed.
3. Gaming
As a parent you hear the word ‘gaming’ and immediately you think No! But hear us out… children love gaming and according to scientific studies technology can teach children how to pay attention, how to focus for longer periods of time and can also teach children to be more detail orientated. These are all great skills to have, right? Obviously, like anything, gaming needs to take place in moderation, but if your child loves to game, then maybe you should join them - even if it’s just so they can laugh at how bad your “skills” are. At least you will be bonding!
4. Connection
By embracing technology with your children, particularly teenagers, you have a chance of staying connected to them. Follow your children on their social media accounts, comment favourably on their posts, ask them to show you cool apps, and share funny memes with them. The closer you are to them and their technology, the easier it is to communicate with them and then to guide them of all the pitfalls. Technology has the ability to unite parents and children – it doesn’t have to divide.
In conclusion
By understanding technology and engaging with your children online, you can help steer your children through the potential pitfalls of technology while enjoying all the advantages that the digital life has to offer. And there are many positive advantages.
